Landscape in San Francisco

San Francisco offers fantastic urban hiking within the city limits, plus easy access to some of the great hikes in the inner Bay Area. Explore expansive city parks from one corner of the city to the other on the Crosstown Trail, take a ferry to Angel Island, or visit historic forts in the Golden Gate National Recreation Area.

San Francisco is an urban hiker's dream. The city is dense and walkable, with neighborhood parks throughout. Large areas of genuine nature are tucked into its park system, from the famous Presidio in the northwest to quiet, windy Fort Funston in the southwest.

The Crosstown Trail

The 17-mile Crosstown Trail links hidden trails, stairs, gardens, and some of the city's biggest and most scenic parks. Find maps and transit information on the Crosstown Trail website.

The Double Cross Trail

The Double Cross Trail crosses the city from dense northeastern neighborhoods to the Pacific, combining urban landmarks with the forests of Stern Grove, the bluffs of Fort Funston, and freshwater lakes. Learn more from the Crosstown Trail organization.

The Presidio and Golden Gate Bridge

The Presidio is San Francisco's urban national park. Inland trails cross a dense former military forest, while coastal trails offer views of beaches, the Marin Headlands, and the Golden Gate Bridge. Explore the Presidio's official trail guide.
