Traveling the San Mateo coast on SamCoast

SamCoast vehicle in a park parking lot

SamCoast is a dial-a-ride system that provides general public curb-to-curb transit service in the rural coastal parts of San Mateo County. An adult fare is $4.25 one way, with service operating from 6:30am to 8:00pm weekdays and 8:00am to 5:00pm weekends.

What is SamCoast?

SamCoast is a reservation-based shared-ride service. This means that it’s necessary to call 1-7 days in advance and request a ride. The operator will take your name and your requested time, and let you know what pickup time they can offer you.

SamCoast’s service zone extends up to Montara and to Half Moon Bay to allow transfers for riders coming down the coast from Pacifica on route 117 and from riders coming across the mountains from Hillsdale on route 294.

Where can I go?

The SamCoast service zone is fuzzy. Any place along the coast south of Half Moon Bay to Año Nuevo State Park at the county border is within the zone, as are places along Pescadero Creek Road and La Honda Road up to Skyline Blvd.

However, keep in mind that not every park and parking lot has an address. When scheduling pickup and dropoff, do your best to give not only a pickup / dropoff location, but a description of the spot where you want to be picked up or dropped off. Large parts of the region served by SamCoast do not have cell signal coverage, and so if the driver cannot find you, they may have no way of contacting you for clarification.
